The Magnificat

My favorite canticle, the Magnificat is associated with so many sense memories for me. We sang it in chapel in seminary when we gathered for Evensong, and light would fall in long, languid beams through the stained glass windows and settle on the faces of my fellow students. We read it aloud in Bible Study, around a table with young adults who were considering their future lives, and had much to say about Mary’s statement that the rich will be brought low and the poor raised up. I sing it, sometimes, during my morning walks, sotto voce as I pass my neighbors and their dogs on the sidewalk.
